Mariechen Danz

At the same time as Ruhr Ding: Klima, the Kunsthalle Recklinghausen is mounting a solo exhibition by the artist Mariechen Danz, who also conceives, together with Kerstin Brätsch, a sand sculpture for the site Silbersee II.

Danz designs spaces for the Kunsthalle Recklinghausen in which she stages her artwork while simultaneously transforming and opening up the museum architecture. The points of departure for her work are communication and knowledge transfer, with the Irish artist focusing her process-based artistic practice on the body. With her sculptures, drawings, costumes, and performances, she plumbs the expressive possibilities, but also the limitations of language, the readability of signs, and the related hierarchical systems. Again and again, her discourse revolves around the subjectivity of all human understanding, substituting empathy and curiosity for one-dimensional explanatory models. Mariechen Danz evokes decolonial approaches in order to shake up Eurocentric historical images and values; she muddles the pigeonholes we are accustomed to using to decisively structure and dominate our world.

The exhibition is part of the Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen 2021 programme and will be curated by Hans-Jürgen Schwalm, director of the Kunsthalle.
