Roderick Buchanan

The second Wandersalon took us to a place not normally directly associated with art: In the fan pub of the traditional club Rot-Weiß Oberhausen Scottish artist Roderick Buchanan presented his work. Buchanan is equally interested in art and sport, and sporting competition appears again and again in his artistic works. In 2006, he hosted the ARTCUP in Huntly, Scotland, a self-proclaimed world championship in which only players who were both good artists and good soccer players could participate. Buchanan not only makes the sport itself a subject, but also the associated fan culture, for example in photo series and research work on the supporters of the rival clubs Celtic Glasgow and Glasgow Rangers. Buchanan's motivation is not only his private fondness for the game, but his interest in exploring codes of cultural belonging and identity and how these determine our social relationships.

Another major theme that runs like a thread through Roderick Buchanan's artistic work is his preoccupation with Scotland's industrialization history and the struggle for independence.
