The guest artist programme by Urbane Künste Ruhr is part of the new overall concept under the artistic direction of Britta Peters and is aimed at artists and collectives who are interested in working in the Ruhr area and a contemporary perspective on the polycentric region and its themes. Urbane Künste Ruhr invites participants to develop a context-specific project during a three-month research stay, which is expected to be presented to the public in a curated exhibition in 2025. The programme will be implemented together with the regional cooperation partners Stiftung Geschichte des Ruhrgebiets and Stiftung Industriedenkmalpflege und Geschichtskultur and with different focal points. The connection to one of the cooperation partners or different focal points will create work opportunities and work locations for different artistic practices as well as different thematic approaches to the Ruhr area.

The newly conceived guest artist programme builds on the open-ended residency programme Zu Gast bei Urbane Künste Ruhr, which has been running since 2018. The decentralised programme offered up to fourteen three- or twelve-month, open-ended residencies each year in cooperation with regional partners, enabling international artists to get to know the region and its social and geographical structure in depth, conduct research and find new impetus for their own artistic work. Unlike in the past, the new guest artist programme aims to ensure that the research conducted on site will later lead to an exhibition.
